Hunter Heritage 2009 & Black Bears!
Written by Wendy Butler

Just a heads up that Vermont is following the lead of other states, like Pennsylvania, and presenting a line of Vermont made products to raise funds for wildlife conservation and restoration.  I was invited to participate in the program in which a portion of each sale goes back to the state.  Products are available for a limited time and each year there will be a different Vermont animal featured on the product.  2008 featured the whitetail buck and for 2009 we have the black bear.

Is it just me or are there a lot more black bears around than ever before?  I've seen sign, seen the pictures on my trail cameras and heck, I've seen a really big bear in my yard!Vermont State Hunter Heritage 2009 Black Bears

Son Wes, pictured here with me wearing the new HH 2009 vest, had a very close encounter during the 2008 bow season.  He was hunting in an old pasture that had a number of wild apple trees we've liberated and fertilized.

There is was surprised by two bears at about SEVEN yards. The larger of the two stood up on it's hind legs and considered him....
It was a high point for Wes' hunting season to be sure.  Encounters such as these are one of the things that makes hunting so special to us.  If he weren't slipping through the bush, in full camo he may never have gotten that close.  I think he grinned for weeks after that.

The Vermont State Fish and Wildlife website has a TON of good information on it.  I recommend anyone interested in wildlife and conservation spend some time checking it out.
I've also purchased my hunting license there!  Why wait until the night before turkey season starts?   Enjoy!  Wendy
